ANNUAL AWARDS EVENING
Cross Keys RFC held their annual awards evening at the clubhouse on Friday 2nd May 2008. The evening was a re-sounding success with awards also presented to Cross Keys Youth who have enjoyed their most successful season for some time, as well as the 'first' XV. The various speeches on the night praised the committment of the players, coaching staff, management and commitees as well as the loyal supporters. It was also a regular statement on the night that Cross Keys RFC is a much better club than the final league positions of the past few seasons suggest. Also it was pleasing to see that so many of the playing squad attended the evening. The award winners were as follows:
Captains Awards: Ben Watkins
Clubman of the Year: Shared by Mark Prangell and Kate Evans
Top Points Scorer: Leon Andrews
Most Improved Player: Dan Preece
Most Outstanding Prospect: Lloyd Burns
Players Player of the Year: Lloyd Burns
Player of the Year: Leon Andrews
Awards were also presented to the following players who were recognised for playing 100 games or more for Cross Keys RFC. They were:-
Craig Gould, David Price, Mark Curtis, Ben Watkins and Dan Dark.
KEYS END DISAPPOINTING SEASON WITH DEFEAT
Cross Keys went down to a 23 points to 7 defeat at Bridgend on Tuesday evening to end what has been a reletively disappointing campaign. Keys scored their only try through Ashley Sweet, which was converted by Scott Sneddon. Bridgend's tries came from Wales Under 20 half back pair Gareth Owen and Rhys Webb with impressive full back Gareth David adding 13 points with 2 conversions and 3 penalties. Keys put up a brave fight in attrocious conditions but ultimately the Ravens 16 - 0 lead at half time was too much for Keys to claw back in the second half. Final score Bridgend 23 - Cross Keys 7. Match Summary now available.
The clubs annual awards evening will take place at the clubhouse this coming Friday evening starting at 7.00pm for 7.30pm.
DEFEAT AT EBBW VALE
Ebbw Vale proved to be too good for Cross Keys at Eugene Cross Park on Saturday afternoon as they secured a bonus point win over the Black and Whites. Discipline has been our biggest enemy for the last few seasons and this game was no exception, 3 yellow cards (to Rhys Peebles, Geraint Gladwyn and Ryan James) and 1 red card, perhaps wrongly given to outstanding 2nd row Ashley Sweet proving a big downfall, 3 of the Steelmen's 4 tries coming when Keys were down to 14 men on 3 seperate occasions. Given the number of interferences at the breakdown from both sides it seems a little strange that only 1 Vale player (Marc Jones) was sin binned by referee Simon Harris. To be brutally honest Keys deserved exactly what they got from this game - nothing! If players are not going to listen to the referee when warned, whether they agree with the officials interpretion and decisions or not - however inconsistent they are, then they will simply see game after game slip away, it makes a big difference having 15 men on the field throughout a game! The commitment once again cannot be faulted as Keys ever tiring small squad head into the last game of the season at Bridgend on Tuesday evening. Keys did score 2 well worked 1st half tries through Leon Andrews, who skipped through a number of attempted tackles to finish off a move that saw him pick up the ball in his own half, and wing James Leadbetter crossing in the corner for a well taken try, outside half Scott Sneddon converting Andrews' try. Final score Ebbw Vale 29 - Cross Keys 12. Match Summary now available.

13. Carl Pocock

2. Lloyd Burns
3. Nathan Buck
4. Ashley Sweet

8. Rhys Peebles
Subs: Brendon Fisher, Craig Gould, Ben Roberts, Mark Curtis, Owen Jones, Dan Dark, Matthew Pewtner.
KEYS DEFEAT WIZARDS
Cross Keys claimed an excellent win over Aberavon at Pandy Park on Saturday. Keys played some of the best rugby they have played all season in the win and it was unfortunate that they did not claim the maximum 5 points, a knock on with the final move of the match saw the bonus point slip away. Keys scored tries through excellent hooker Lloyd Burns, centre Carl Pocock, his fourth try in 4 successive games and make-shift wing James Leadbetter. Scott Sneddon added 16 points with his reliable left boot. As well as each of the scorers there was another superb display from number 8 Colin Bridges and flankers Rhys Peebles and Tom Lampard also stood out for Keys. Understandably the Wizards probably had one eye on their cup semi final next week which no doubt helped Keys but the skill, commitment and effort from Keys was such that they never looked like losing this game. Final score Cross Keys 31 - Aberavon 14. Match summary available now.
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR ABERAVON GAME
The Cross Keys team for Saturdays Principality Premiership game against Aberavon has been announced, the final game at home for the 2007/08 season. The team includes Dragons player Aled Thomas at full back in place of Leon Andrews who injured an arm at Swansea last Saturday. Mark Curtis captains the side with Ben Watkins on the bench and Keys have one space available for AN Other on the bench which they will this week hope to name as at Swansea only 6 subs were named. Scott Sneddon and Lloyd Burns both return to the side having missed the defeat at Swansea. The team is as follows:-
15. Aled Thomas
14. James Leadbetter
13. Carl Pocock
12. David Price
11. Matthew Pewtner
10. Scott Sneddon
9. Owen Jones
1. Julian Price
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Craig Gould
4. Mark Curtis (c)
5. Ashley Sweet
6. Geraint Gladwyn
7. Tom Lampard
8. Colin Bridges
Subs: Dan Preece, Nathan Buck, Ben Watkins, Rhys Peebles, Brendon Fisher, Ryan James, AN Other.
KEYS DEFEATED AT SWANSEA
Cross Keys gave yet another spirited performance but could not quite claim the win. Keys scored a total of 3 tries by Colin Bridges, Carl Pocock and Dan Preece, James Leadbetter converted Bridges' and Preece's tries. The fact that Keys pushed the in-form Whites, who have now won an incredible 10 games in a row, so close was pleasing to see espeicially given the fact that Keys have currently got big problems with injuries and commitment from certain players. Keys battled back from trailing 20 - 0 to earn a well deserved bonus point, which had ball retention been better could potentially have been a full 5 points. The likes of Colin Bridges, who as always was fully committed to the Keys cause, Dan Preece, hooker Ben Roberts, Ashley Sweet, James Leadbetter and replacement Owen Jones played superbly throughout this game although each member of the team can be proud of their own individual efforts. Final Score Swansea 23 - Cross Keys 19. Match summary now available.
BRIDGEND GAME

This will be the final match of the season for Cross Keys.

Lloyd Burns is suspended after picking up 3 yellow cards this season. The squad is as follows:-

Please remember that Kick Off for this game v. Swansea is at 5.00pm due to the Ospreys EDF Energy Cup Final game at Twickenham.
ENTERTAINING CLASH SEES NEATH THROUGH TO SEMI FINAL
Cross Keys were unable to overcome the might of Neath in the Konica Minolta Cup quarter final. The double favourites were too good at the end of the day where their superior fitness and power was shown. Keys were taken apart in the first half and trailed 22 - 8 at half time with Neath looking unstoppable, the impressive Marcus Johnstone crossed for an excellent try with Scott Sneddon adding a penalty, but whatever was said at half time to the Keys players seemed to work as they played some excellent rugby and with just over 20 minutes remaining had turned the game on it's head to lead 23 points to 22, Carl Pocock and Leon Andrews crossed for tries with Sneddon converting 1 and adding a further penalty. It was from here that Neath came back into the game and gradually once again took control which Keys simply could not match, Ospreys centre Jonathan Spratt was at the heart of everything for Neath and too often cut the Keys defence to pieces. The never say die attitude of Keys during this game was great to see and was evident when Marcus Johnstone crossed for his second try on the final whistle. Final score Cross Keys 28 - Neath 44. Match Summary now available.
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR QUARTER FINAL
The Keys team for the Konica Minolta Cup Quarter Final game at home to Neath on Saturday has been named. The team is as follows:-
15. Leon Andrews
14. James Leadbetter
13. Carl Pocock
12. Shane Regan
11. Marcus Johnstone
10. Scott Sneddon
9. Owen Jones
1. Julian Price
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Craig Gould
4. Mark Curtis
5. Ben Watkins (c)
6. Tom Lampard
7. Rhys Peebles
8. Colin Bridges
Subs: Ryan James, Dan Dark, Dan Preece, Nathan Buck, Ashley Sweet, James Malpas, Geraint Gladwyn.
SWANSEA GAME KICK OFF CHANGE
Cross Keys Principality Premiership game at St. Helens against Swansea next Saturday will now kick off at 5.00pm and not 2.30pm as previously expected. This is due to the Ospreys EDF Energy Cup Final appearence against Leicester at Twickenham which will kick off at 2.30pm, obviously a number of Swansea supporters will want to see both games so with the kick off change this is now possible.
KONICA MINOLTA CUP

All supporters are asked to remember that Saturday's game is all pay and that season tickets or passes do not apply for this game.
A WIN AT LAST FOR KEYS
Cross Keys overcame the efforts of Maesteg to record a first league win, following 6 consecutive league defeats. The Keys scored tries through Carl Pocock and skipper Ben Watkins whilst Scott Sneddon kicked 13 points in the difficult conditions, with 2 conversions and 3 penalties. The performance wasn't faultless but the most important thing is the victory at the end of a baron run of defeats, Keys made basic errors and were too often guilty of wasting good opportunities during the game. Special praise has to be reserved for scrum half Owen Jones, who in his last game before shoulder surgery produced an excellent performance, we wish Owen all the best and can't wait to see him back fit and raring to go next season. The game was a lively one and referee Gary Davies handed out a total of 4 yellow cards (1 of which was for Keys' Lloyd Burns) and 2 red cards (1 to Keys Rhys Peebles) for fighting in the closing stages. Final Score Cross Keys 23 - Maesteg 10. Match summary now available
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR MAESTEG GAME
The Keys team for the Principality Premiership game at home to Maesteg on Saturday has been named following training on Thursday evening. The team includes Dragon's Academy player Matthew Pewtner on the wing. The team is as follows:-
15. James Leadbetter
14. Matthew Pewtner
13. Carl Pocock
12. Shane Regan
11. Marcus Johnstone
10. Scott Sneddon
9. Owen Jones
1. Julian Price
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Craig Gould
4. Mark Curtis
5. Ben Watkins (c)
6. Tom Lampard
7. Geraint Gladwyn
8. Colin Bridges
Subs: Ryan James, David Price, Dan Preece, Brendon Fisher, Ashley Sweet, Rhys Peebles, A.N. Other.
KEYS DEFEATED IN DOUR DERBY GAME
Newport took the honours at Cross Keys in the Gwent derby on Saturday afternoon. A poor game only sprung into life towards the end of the 80 minutes where Keys could and should have snatched what would have been a shock victory. As far as Gwent derbies go this was dull, uninspiring and quite frankly boring considering the rivalry between the two sides. Leon Andrews crossed for a try in stoppage time thanks to a break by Ashley Sweet who handed off the attempted tackles of the Newport defence before passing inside to Andrews who crossed unopposed near to the posts, outside half Aled Thomas, on permit from Newport Gwent Dragons kicked the conversion and a first half penalty but it wasn't enough for Keys. At the end of the game with the final whistle imminent Keys worked an overlap and with the try line begging Carl Pocock lost his footing and couldn't cross to give Keys the victory. The Keys lacked that cutting edge and aggression which we have seen in the games with Neath and Llanelli in recent weeks, had they played like they did in those games Keys would have taken the points but as it was they once again picked up a losing bonus point and suffered a sixth successive league defeat. The overall verdict - NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Final Score Cross Keys 10 - Newport 14. Match Summary now available.
ALL BLACKS DEFEAT THE KEYS
Cross Keys were defeated by reigning champions and surely the champions elect for this season, Neath at Pandy Park last Friday evening. In the poor weather conditions both sides can be proud of their efforts to try and play some good rugby, in a game that seemed to be stop/start due to the referees whistle! Keys fly half Scott Sneddon had an good game on his league debut since signing as a Cross Keys player (he had previously played one game at home in the cup and 2 games on permit from Cardiff Blues Academy). Sneddon scored all of the home sides points with 2 penalties and a drop goal. Keys couldn't quite match Neath's superior fitness and skill and two late tries from Matthew Nuthall secured the win for the Welsh All Blacks who are hitting exceptional form at this key stage of the season, whereas Keys form continues to slide and with this result Keys now lie in 10th place in the Premiership table following 5 consecutive league defeats. This was seen by many as a dress rehearsal for the cup quarter final which takes place at Pandy Park on April 5th, where hopefully Keys can get a few players back fit and available for selection again and hopefully secure a place in the Semi Finals of the cup for only the second time in the clubs history. Final score Cross Keys 9 - Neath 21. Match summary now available.
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR NEATH GAME
The Keys team for the Principality Premiership game at home to Neath this evening has been named following training on Thursday evening. The team is as follows:-
15. Leon Andrews
14. Carl Pocock
13. Lee Humphreys
12. Shane Regan
11. Marcus Johnstone
10. Scott Sneddon
9. Owen Jones
1. Julian Price
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Nathan Buck
4. Mark Curtis
5. Ben Watkins (c)
6. Tom Lampard
7. Rhys Peebles
8. James Malpas
Subs: To be selected from rest of squad
KEYS FALL SHORT AT STRADEY
Cross Keys first half performance undoubtably cost them victory at Llanelli on Saturday afternoon. During the first half Llanelli had secured a bonus point for scoring 4 tries but Keys were still well in touch at the interval trailing by just 24 points to 16, Carl Pocock crossed for Keys try during the first half and the impressive boot of Leon Andrews added a further 11 points in the first 40 minutes. At half time Keys must have been given some harsh words by the coaching team as the 2nd half was a much better performance, despite not ultimately winning Keys this game. Substitute Shane Regan scored a superb try thanks to a quick break from scrum half Owen Jones and support by Geraint Gladwyn, during this secong half and Andrews added a further 5 points with a penalty and conversion of Regan's try. Keys came close to snatching the points towards the end of the game where desperate defence on their own line turned into a promising attack for Keys, led by lively prop Dan Preece and wing Lee Humphreys but it wasn't to be and Keys had to once again make do with a losing bonus point away from Pandy Park. Final Score Llanelli 32 - Cross Keys 26. Match Summary available now.
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR LLANELLI GAME
The Keys team for the Principality Premiership game at Stradey Park against Llanelli has been named. The team named is pretty much as expected. The team is as follows:-
15. Leon Andrews
14. Lee Humphreys
13. Carl Pocock
12. Dan Dark
11. Marcus Johnstone
10. Scott Sneddon
9. Owen Jones
1. Dan Preece
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Craig Gould
4. Ashley Sweet
5. Ben Watkins (c)
6. Rhys Peebles
7. Tom Lampard
8. James Malpas
Subs: Julian Price, Brendon Fisher, Mark Curtis, Geraint Gladwyn, Ryan James, Scott Mitchell, Shane Regan.
MANLEY BANNED / BACK LEAVES PANDY PARK
Cross Keys have suffered a double blow over the past week or so with backs coach Dai Manley picking up a 12 month touchline ban following his sending off at Cardiff Arms Park last month for verbally abusing referee Hugh Watkins and Fitness and skills Coach Matthew Back leaving the club to join Division 1 East promotion contenders Caerphilly as assistant coach, to further improve his coaching career. Manley's ban comes after the WRU disciplinary hearing last week and the club has also received a £1000 fine with £500 suspended for 12 months as a result of the abuse towards the officials. The ban will not affect Manley's position with the club and the club would like to wish Matthew all the very best at Caerphilly.
FRIENDLY CANCELLED
Last night's (21/02/08) scheduled friendly between Cross Keys and Ynysddu at Pandy Park was cancelled as the visitors were unable to raise a side for the game. I'm sorry the website was not updated prior to Kick Off but I was only informed myself at 7.30pm last night, so please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused. The next game for Keys is the trip to Stradey Park to take on Llanelli in the Principality Premiership on Saturday 1st March 2008.
SWEET NAMED IN UNDER 20s SIDE
Cross Keys second row, 18 year old Ashley Sweet has been named in the Wales Under 20s side for Friday nights 6 Nations Championship game against Italy at Rodney Parade. Ashley is one of 3 Dragons academy players named in the starting XV, alongside him will be Jason Tovey and Jimmy Norris. Each of those three has a close link with Cross Keys RFC, Sweet as a member of the current Keys squad, Tovey is a former Keys youth player who helped them win the Caerphilly and district cup 2 seasons ago and Norris, started last season with Keys before moving on to Bedwas midway through the 06/07 season, Norris also appeared for Keys once this season against Swansea, before scoring a try double against Keys for Bedwas when Keys defeated the Bridge Field outfit by 18 points to 14 earlier in the season (Tovey was also on the scoresheet with 2 conversions for Bedwas on that day). Best wishes to all the players involved on Friday evening.
KEYS DRAW NEATH
The Keys have been rewarded with a home draw in the Quarter Finals of the Konica Minolta Cup against Neath. The Welsh All Blacks made no secret of their desire to win the double (League & Cup) this season and will now have to overcome Keys at Pandy Park if they are to progress. The match will be played on the weekend of Saturday 5th April 2008. The full draw is:-
Aberavon v Ebbw Vale ; Cross Keys v Neath ; Glamorgan Wdrs. v Newport ; Pontypridd v Bridgend.
FRIENDLY MATCH ARRANGED
Cross Keys have arranged a friendly match against Ynysddu at Pandy Park on Thursday evening (21/02/08), Kick Off 7.30pm. The match has been planned to give a number of Keys players some much needed game time to regain match fitness following injury, as well give some of The Keys squad players a run out as we enter the vital closing stages of the season.
CONDOLENCES
Everyone at Cross Keys RFC was saddened to hear of the news that former physio, Gerry Lewis passed away on Friday. Gerry was very well respected in Welsh rugby and had a long association with Keys and with Newport but was also for a very long period better known as the physio of the Welsh national team and was often referred to as the 16th member of the extremely successful Welsh team during the 60s and 70s. Our sincere condolences go to Gerry's family and friends.
KEYS GO THROUGH TO QUARTER FINALS
Cross Keys went through to the last eight of the Konica Minolta Cup, following victory over Newport Saracens in Round 5 on Saturday afternoon. Sarries must be credited for their effort and determination but had no answer to The Keys quick thinking and better use of the ball. The result was once again never really in doubt and Keys scored tries through Lloyd Burns, Leon Andrews, Dan Preece and Marcus Johnstone, Burns and Johnstone each crossing for their 10th tries of the season. New signing (permantly from the Blues academy) Scott Sneddon enjoyed an excellent all round game and came away with a personal tally of 12 points. A hard earned victory for Keys who will need to drastically improve over the coming weeks to finish the season on a high (hopefully at the Millennium Stadium!). Final Score Cross Keys 32 - Newport Saracens 8. Match Summary now available.
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR SARRIES GAME
The Keys team for the Konica Minolta Cup 5th Round game with Newport Saracens has been named. Keys name Scott Sneddon at outside half, Sneddon finally signed for The Keys from Cardiff Blues Academy. Sneddon played twice for Keys earlier in the season on permit and has now signed permantly. Keys wing Gareth Williams is out of action for a while after breaking his arm in the defeat at Llandovery. The team is as follows:-
15. Leon Andrews
14. Lee Humphreys
13. Carl Pocock
12. Shane Regan
11. Marcus Johnstone
10. Scott Sneddon
9. Owen Jones
1. Julian Price
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Brendon Fisher
4. Mark Curtis
5. Ben Watkins (c)
6. Geraint Gladwyn
7. Tom Lampard
8. Colin Bridges
Subs: Nathan Buck, Dan Preece, Sitaveni Rabuli, Rhys Peebles, Dan Dark, Scott Mitchell, David Price.
KEYS SUFFER DEFEAT AT DROVERS
Cross Keys crashed to defeat at bottom of the table Llandovery last Friday evening and deserved exactly what they got - nothing! On paper with the greatest respect to the Drovers this should have been a routine victory for The Keys but never looked like being so. Keys failed to create the opportunities that they needed and their only score of the entire match came from a lineout move which saw hooker Lloyd Burns march over the line. Yes, Keys had players unavailable for this Friday evening trip, quite how the powers that be can expect a semi professional sports team to travel a long distance after a working day, where the average person may not finish a shift until at least 6 o'clock is quite incredible, the journey to Llandovery would normally take at least an hour and a half to complete, but Keys fielded a strong side, despite this and as previously stated should really have come away with the points. Keys must pick up very quickly indeed as they play host to Newport Saracens at Pandy Park on 16th February in the Konica Minolta Cup. Final Score Llandovery 19 - Cross Keys 5. Match Summary now available.
TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR LLANDOVERY GAME
The Keys team for the long trip to the Church Bank to take on Llandovery on Friday evening (Kick Off 7.30pm) has been announced. Owen Jones returns from suspension and takes his place on the bench also Keys need to finalise the left wing postion and include Dragons prop Jamie Corsi, a Wales tourist to Australia last summer, who also starts the game on the bench. The team is as follows:-
15. Leon Andrews
14. Gareth Williams
13. Carl Pocock/Lee Humphreys
12. Shane Regan
11. AN Other
10. Ryan James
9. James Leadbetter
1. Julian Price
2. Lloyd Burns
3. Craig Gould
4. Mark Curtis
5. Ben Watkins (c)
6. Sitaveni Rabuli
7. Tom Lampard
8. James Malpas
Subs: Nathan Buck, Jamie Corsi, Geraint Gladwyn, Rhys Peebles, Owen Jones, Marcus Johnstone, Carl Pocock/Lee Humphreys.
KEYS UNFORTUNATE TO LOSE AT ARMS PARK
The Keys put in a spirited, committed performance against Cardiff at the Arms Park on Wednesday evening in the rearranged Principality Premiership but could only come away with a losing bonus point as they maybe lacked that extra bit of skill required on the night. Keys out-scored The blue & blacks by 3 tries to 2 with debutant Owen Williams scoring a superb opener inside the opening 5 minutes. Hooker Lloyd Burns has his eyes on Garry Horrigan's try scoring record for a hooker in one season, after he crashed over following a scrum on the Cardiff line for his 8th try on the season and Gareth Williams made it a try scoring double for the Williams' brothers with a try early in the second half. Leon Andrews and James Malpas performed extremely well on their return to the Arms Park and skipper Ben Watkins and Geraint Gladwyn were also superb. Andrews kicked the remaining 4 points converting the Williams' brothers tries. A valiant effort by The Keys but these sort of performances must soon start producing victories to really make it a job well done. Final Score Cardiff 23 - Cross Keys 19. Match Summary now available.

DEVELOPMENTS PLANNED AT PANDY PARK
Cross Keys home at Pandy Park is set to benefit from the development of an all weather floodlit training pitch which will not only benefit The Keys rugby teams but will also be used by the community including Cross Keys college. The plans are currently being put together but are set to be approved very soon. Together with the massive improvement to the pitch at Pandy Park there are also plans to improve the covered terracing at the ground. These planned developments prove that there are exctiting times ahead both on and off the pitch at Cross Keys RFC.
KEYS GO THROUGH TO LAST 16
Cross Keys came through comfortably in the potentially tricky 4th Round Konica Minolta Cup tie at Merthyr on Saturday afternoon. Wing Marcus Johnstone grabbed a hat-trick of tries whilst make shift wing Carl Pocock and hooker Lloyd Burns also crossed for The Keys. Leon Andrews kicked the remaining 15 points with 3 conversions and 3 penalties. A good day and result for Keys although a number of injuries were picked up in the process, including Rhys Miller who dislocated his kneecap inside the first 2 minutes of the game, but Rhys was back at the ground following his trip to hospital. Keys now turn their attentions back to the league on Wednesday evening when they travel to the capital to take on Cardiff at the Arms Park, Kick Off 7.15pm. Match Summary for Merthyr game is now available.
RECENT RESULTS
Once again I'm very sorry for the lack of updates over recent weeks. I became a Father on the Monday following the last minute victory at Bedwas and since then I seem to have had no time to update the site, but everything is settled now and the updates can now occur. The other game to take place during this period of no updates was the 0-13 defeat at home to Pontypridd on Saturday 19th January. The scores were as follows:-
Versus Bedwas @ The Bridge Field (Principality Premiership). Final Score Bedwas 14 - Cross Keys 18. Match Summary now available.
Versus Pontypridd @ Pandy Park (Principality Premiership). Final Score Cross Keys 0 - Pontypridd 13. Match Summary now available.

SWEET NAMED IN FINAL UNDER 20 SQUAD
Cross Keys promising second row, Ashley Sweet has been named in the Wales Under 20 squad for this years 6 nations competition. The 18 year old has been named in the squad together with hooker Ben Roberts, originally allocated to The Keys from the Dragons academy at the start of the season, Jason Tovey, the Keys youth product who played once for Keys last season and winger Jimmy Norris who appeared for Keys as a sub against Swansea in December and was a Keys player for the early part of last season. Congratulations to all.
WANDERERS DEFEATED BY KEYS
Cross Keys defeated high flying Glamorgan Wanderers at Pandy Park last Saturday. Torrential downpours of both rain and then heavy hailstones and sleet prior to Kick Off meant that conditions were awkward to say the least. To their credit both sides adapted well to the poor conditions but it was Keys who deserved the victory at the final whistle. Keys got off to a fantastic start with good lineout ball providing hooker Rhys Miller with his first try of the season, in what was also his first start of the season following a number of serious injuries during the previous season. Miller crashed over following the lineout ball from flanker Tom Lampard. Leon Andrews, who had dragged himself out of his sick-bed to start the game kicked the remaining Keys points with a conversion and 2 penalties although he missed several straight forward kicks in the second half that would have extended Keys lead. As it was this was an excellent win given the conditions and the Wanderers lofty position in the Principality Premiership table. The Ely based side did pick up a losing bonus point which means they stay above Keys by virtue of scoring 2 more tries than Keys. Final score Cross Keys 13 - Glamorgan Wanderers 8. Match Summary now available.
TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT DELAYED
Cross Keys have not yet announced the 22 to take on Glamorgan Wanderers at Pandy Park on Saturday afternoon. Several players are doubtful due to the sickness bug that has hit the club over the past week or so. The team will be assembled from the squad below:-
Leon Andrews, James Leadbetter, Gareth Williams, Marcus Johnstone, Lee Humphreys, Dan Dark, David Price, Shane Regan, Scott Mitchell, Scott Sneddon, Ryan James, Owen Jones, Julian Price, Craig Gould, Brendon Fisher, Dan Preece, Nathan Buck, Lloyd Burns, Rhys Miller, Khalid Jama, Mark Curtis, Grant Wilson, Ben Watkins, Ashley Sweet, Tom Lampard, James Malpas, Colin Bridges, Geraint Gladwyn, Sitaveni Rabuli.
KEYS DEFEAT TOP OF THE TABLE STEELMEN
Cross Keys held on for an excellent victory over local rivals Ebbw Vale last Saturday in the Principality Premiership fixture, a first Gwent Derby victory for Keys in almost 2 years. Ebbw Vale started well and raced in to an early 10 - 0 lead thanks to tries from John Williams and Aaron Bramwell, that was all Vale could manage for the entire game with Keys gradually coming back into the contest. James Leadbetter kicked a penalty just before half time and then after the break Marcus Johnstone finished an excellent move with a well taken try in the corner and Leadbetter kicked a further penalty to give Keys a lead they would not surrender. This victory was all the more remarkable given that Keys were serverely hit by withdrawals prior to kick off, both centres named to start the game, Lee Humphreys and Dan Dark withdrew with a stomach bug together with David Price, who surely would have been in line to replace either Humphreys or Dark. This meant that Keys coaching team frantically tried to bring in players prior to Kick Off, UWIC centre Matt McLean was secured on permit just a few hours before kick off whilst Shane Regan started his first game for the club, his only other appearence being in the victory at home to Loughor in the cup where he came off the bench to score a brace of tries. On top of the sickness that had hit the Keys camp, Leon Andrews and Craig Gould were both injured in the warm up meaning a late call up to the starting lineup for James Leadbetter and Nathan Buck. These changes must surely of meant the average age of the Keys squad that took to the field was surely not much over 20 years of age. A great day and victory for Keys, who despite what you may read elsewhere probably did deserve the victory against a much more experienced Vale side that had started the day in a confident mood at the top of the table, defeat must be hard to take! Once again full credit to the Keys management for making sure this game was never in doubt given the conditions in the days leading up to Saturday, the Pandy Park surface stood up exceptionally well. What a turn around this is for a surface previously criticised by some rivals as being a "cabbage patch"! Final Score Cross Keys 11 - Ebbw Vale 10. Match Summary now available.

ILL DISCIPLINE COSTS KEYS
Cross Keys missed a golden opportunity to defeat Newport at Rodney Parade last Saturday. With Owen Jones red-carded and Colin Bridges and Ben Watkins each spending 10 minutes in the sin bin Keys can surely only look at discipline as the primary reason for this defeat in a game where the visitors must have enjoyed 80% of the territorial advantage. Jones was given is marching orders after 20 minutes following a suspected punch and a stamp. This was to prove crucial as Keys came so close to upsetting the Black and Ambers. Leon Andrews once again scored all of Keys points, for the third league game in succession but Lloyd Burns was Keys man of the match, a terrific all-round performance from the all action hooker, where only his lineout game seemed slightly off colour. Keys may have picked up a losing bonus point but this could and perhaps should have been much more. Final Score Newport 19 - Cross Keys 14. Match Summary available now.
TEAM NAMED FOR DERBY GAME AT NEWPORT
The Keys have announced the team to visit Newport in the Principality Premiership game on Saturday afternoon (22nd December 2007). THE KEYS FACE DIFFICULT TRIP IN NEXT ROUND
Cross Keys have been drawn to play at Merthyr in Round 4 of the Konica Minolta Cup, to be played 26th January 2008. This will be a tough task for Keys against the Ironmen of Division 1 West at The Wern Ground. The full draw can be viewed here.
KEYS SAFELY THROUGH TO LAST 32
Cross Keys defeated a spirited Loughor side to book their place in the 4th Round of the Konica Minolta Cup. James Leadbetter was the star for The Keys with a match total of 24 points which included a try and a 100% success rate from the boot. As you would expect Loughor were plucky and spirited but Keys superior fitness and skill level proved vital to this result. Coming up to half time Keys led by 17 points to 6 and were perhaps slightly fortunate that Loughor had not used the possession they had to greater effect. Just when Loughor looked like they may threaten the Keys tryline, after stringing together a number of phases, a long ball out was intercepted by Keys wing Gareth Williams and he sprited in under the posts to score his first try of the afternoon, the conversion was successful and Keys led 24 - 6 at half time. In the second half Keys stepped up a gear a took control of the match to great effect and eventually won the game by 59 points to 11, although it did seem as if the referee played next to no extra time, of which there should have been at least around 5 minutes. This was a comfortable victory for The Keys although Loughor can take heart from their performance. Match Summary available now.
SQUAD ANNOUNCED FOR LOUGHOR GAME
The Keys have announced a squad of 24 from which the 22 will be selected for Saturday's game at home to Loughor in the 3rd Round of the Konica Minolta Cup. The squad includes new signing Shane Regan and Sitaveni Rabuli who, as previously mentioned has returned from army duties in Afghanistan. The full squad is:-
Leon Andrews, Gareth Williams, Marcus Johnstone, Shane Regan, Lee Humphreys, David Price, Scott Mitchell, Ryan James, James Leadbetter, James Malpas, Colin Bridges, Sitaveni Rabuli, Rhys Peebles, Tom Lampard, Grant Wilson, Mark Curtis, Lloyd Burns, Rhys Miller, Khalid Jama, Nathan Buck, Craig Gould, Julian Price, Dan Preece, Brendon Fisher.
KEYS GAME FALLS VICTIM TO WEATHER
Cross Keys game at the Arms Park on Saturday against Cardiff was postponed due to the appalling weather conditions and a waterlogged pitch. The entire Principality Premiership schedule on Saturday was washed out. The Keys next game now is against Loughor in the Konica Minolta Cup 3rd Round tie at Pandy Park on Saturday 15th December 2007. It is believed that despite the storms of the past week or so the Pandy Parkhas stood up superbly and would have been playable on Saturday had the Keys been at home. This is proof of the work that has been done on the ground during recent months on a pitch slated by so many for being the worst in the league!
RABULI RETURNS TO BOOST KEYS
Cross Keys are delighted to announce that Fijian favourite Sitaveni Rabuli has returned fit and well from serving with the British forces in Afghanistan and is ready to make his return to the Keys squad. Although Rabuli has only played one competitive for the Keys he has become a favourite with the Keys fans and players alike and was the key reason for the success at the first ever Men of Gwent Sevens tournament during pre-season. He hasn't made the squad for the trip to Cardiff but 'Rab' may well make his comeback in the cup game at home to Loughor next Saturday. Welcome home Rab!
TEAM NAMED FOR CARDIFF GAME

Aaron Coundley (prop)
Ashley Sweet (2nd Row)
Also included are academy hooker Ben Roberts, although he is yet to appear for The Keys and winger Jimmy Norris, who played for Keys last season and came on as a replacement for Keys against Swansea last Saturday. Jason Tovey is also named in the squad, he played one game for The Keys last year and is a product of our youth team. Congratulations and best wishes to all those involved.
CROSS KEYS DEFEAT THE ALL WHITES
Cross Keys claimed an excellent win at Pandy Park on Saturday against Swansea. On a miserable afternoon where several games in the Principality Premiership fell victim to the poor conditions both sides can be commended for trying to play an open, attractive game on a surface that has vastly improved without any shadow of a doubt. Leon Andrews was once again Keys' hero after scoring all 18 of their points but he was just one of the key individuals who performed well. Number 8 James Malpas is really starting to show what a class act he is, his rampaging runs caused the All Whites no end of problems and his defensive performance was tremendous, others to stand out include centre Dan Dark, Prop Craig Gould, who caused Ospreys prop Cai Griffiths major problems in the scrummage throughout the game but above all else it was a good team performance and with the result Keys climbed no fewer than 3 places in the league table. One dissappointing outcome in this game, however was the loss of skipper Ben Watkins with possible broken ribs early in the first half. Final Score Cross Keys 18 - Swansea 7. Match Summary available now.

KEYS SUFFER DEFEAT AT ABERAVON
A well below strength Cross Keys fell to defeat at Aberavon last Saturday. Keys were serverely hit by injuries, among the injured were no fewer than 5 centres. Although Keys put up a brave performance and were a little unfortunate to trail at half time, the Wizards took control in the second half with greater power and fitness confortably took the honours. Keys ended the game with 3 recognised scrum halves on the pitch and a large number of players playing out of position, as they had done for all of the game. Final Score Aberavon 30 - Cross Keys 6. Match summary now available.
TEAM NAMED FOR ABERAVON GAME

KEYS SURVIVE RAVENS COMEBACK
Cross Keys managed to hold on for victory against Bridgend at Pandy Park on Saturday afternoon although could probably have won by a more comfortable scoreline and possibly maximum points, given their dominence in the first half. Keys scored tries through Carl Pocock, his first for the club on his home debut, Gareth Williams, who spirited in for a well worked try and replacement prop Craig Gould who went over for a try after a period of heavy pressure on the Bridgend try line. Keys once again didn't seem to mentally come out of the changing rooms after half time until around 20 minutes into the second half, and Bridgend took full advantage and created numerous opportunities which Keys seemed to have no answer to. Fortunately for the Black & Whites, the Ravens didn't quite to enough in this period, although they did score a try 10 minutes from the end but for the last 5 to 10 minutes Keys climbed back on top and Craig Gould's try meant victory was all but guaranteed. Despite this victory the home form still needs to drastically improve, particularly in the second halves of games where Keys need to be a lot more clinical if Keys are to enjoy a successful season. Final Score Cross Keys 23 - Bridgend 17. Match Summary now available.
TEAM NAMED FOR RAVENS GAME
The Keys have announced the team to take on Bridgend in the Principality Premiership game on Saturday afternoon at Pandy Park. The Keys are able to call up on the services of Dragons pair, centre Gareth Maule who starts at inside centre and hooker Kieron Crawford who is a replacment. The AN Other listed on the bench is likely to be one of, Scott Mitchell, Ieuan Coombes or Shane Regan.

KEYS DEFEATED AT THE GNOLL
Cross Keys put up a brave fight against, big spending champions Neath at the Gnoll on Saturday afternoon, but couldn't quite do enough to get anything other than a losing bonus point from this game. Keys, of course defeated the Welsh All Blacks (or should that be Pinks?) on their own patch last season and for long periods of this game looked like they could have repeated that result, but it wasn't to be. Keys were camped on the Neath tryline for the last 5 minutes or so but couldn't quite cross the line to hopefully clinch a dramatic chance to draw the game. A valiant effort from a depleted Keys side and hopefully the spirit shown on this occassion and in the closing stages of last weeks game at Maesteg will continue for the forseeable future. Final Score Neath 19 - Cross Keys 12. Match summary now available
GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS
Cross Keys have been dealt a huge blow with Dragons centre, Gareth Chapman being released by the region and deciding to join Cardiff. Chapman, a Keys regular for this season and last season will now pursue a teaching career and has joined the Blue and Blacks as he felt he would not be comfortable playing rugby in Gwent. We wish Chappy all the best. Also leaving the club is David James (Bloggsy), who has re-joined his former club, Division 1 East side Blackwood. Bloggsy has been out with a knee injury since early on in the season but still managed 2 tries in his 3 appearences this year and has stated his desire to rejoin Blackwood, many Keys supporters claiming this is a waste of a very talented young player, with no disrespect meant towards our friends from Blackwood. The good news in the eventful week at Cross Keys came when Newport HSOB centre Carl Pocock joined the club. Pocock made his debut at the Gnoll against Neath and looked to be a decent acquisition for the Black and Whites. Welcome to the club Carl. Also Keys coach David Manley, sent off at Pontypridd for verbal abuse has been let off following a meeting of the WRU's disciplinary committee, although the club and management were warned of their future conduct.
TEAM NAMED FOR NEATH GAME
The Keys have announced the team to take on Neath in the Principality Premiership game on Saturday afternoon at The Gnoll. Cross Keys hand a debut to new signing, centre Carl Pocock who has joined the club from Newport HSOB. The Cross Keys team is:

14. Gareth Williams
13. Carl Pocock
12. David Price
11. Ieuan Coombes
10. Ryan James

KEYS CLINCH DRAW AT THE OLD PARISH
Cross Keys can perhaps count themselves a little fortunate to have secured 2 points in this game at Maesteg. In a poor game which the home side could and perhaps should have won Keys came from 10 - nil down to tie the scores in the closing stages, thanks to a Leon Andrews penalty, 7 minutes from time and a Lloyd Burns try, which Andrews converted confidently to level the scores just 3 minutes from the end and the 2 sides weren't to be separated from there, despite a last ditch penalty goal attempt by Maesteg's Luke Richards, which just dropped short of the goal posts. Final Score Maesteg 10 - Cross Keys 10. Match summary now available.
TEAM NAMED FOR MAESTEG GAME
The Keys have announced the team to take on Maesteg in the Principality Premiership game on Saturday afternoon at The Old Parish (Llynfi Road). The Cross Keys team is:

KEYS DEFEATED AT HOME AGAIN
The lack of a proven goal kicker was a big problem for Keys for most of last season. This season that problem has been addressed with the signing of Leon Andrews from Cardiff. Unfortunately for Keys, Andrews was not fit enough to play on Saturday against Llanelli due to a dead leg - this perhaps was the biggest reason for the defeat against the youngsters from West Wales. Keys struggled for the opening 15 minutes or so and Llanelli outside half, Daniel Evans punished Keys with 3 penalties in quick succession, Keys then started to play some nice rugby and opened their account with a Ieuan Coombes penalty following some decent build up play, Coombes was an early replacement for another dead leg victim, Dan Dark meaning a big reshuffle in the Keys backline. Keys followed on from this and scored 3 well-worked tries, the first from Marcus Johnstone, who pounced on a delicate chip from influential skipper Ben Watkins for his fourth try of the season. Rhys Peebles was at the bottom of a rolling maul that finished up over the Llanelli try line to get his first try for a few seasons and make shift full back, Lee Humphreys, who had been listed to start on the wing for Keys but was moved to full back following Leon Andrews withdrawal and was then moved to his preferred centre role after Dark's injury crossed for his second try in as many weeks towards the end of the opening half, following clever play by Scott Mitchell. None of these tries were converted and between 17 year old, Ieuan Coombes and Scott Mitchell at least 9 vital points went begging for the Black and Whites. Keys led 18-9 at half time but simply didn't turn up in the second half and but for the closing 5 minutes did not look like taking the spoils. Llanelli introduced several influential replacements and crossed for two second half tries, the second of which was a little dubious as there seemed to be a large obstruction that the referee chose to ignore but taking nothing away from Llanelli who thoroughly deserved the victory after playing with more hunger and desire to win, especially in the second period than the home side. Final Score Cross Keys 18 - Llanelli 23. Match Summary now available.

KEYS GRAB FIRST HOME WIN OF THE SEASON
Cross Keys defeated Llandovery at Pandy Park on Saturday 13th October to gain their first home win of this season. Keys crossed for 4 tries to also grab their first maximum points of the season. Tries were scored by the outstanding hooker, Lloyd Burns (x2), Dan Dark and Lee Humphreys. Leon Andrews enjoyed a great afternoon with the boot with a 100% kicking display, through 4 conversions and 3 penalties. Keys fielded Dragons number 8 Nic Fitisemanu and he was his usual rampaging self until he was forced off with a torn calf muscle after 30 minutes, also centre Gareth Chapman was superb for Keys. ANOTHER EXCELLENT SIGNING FOR KEYS
Cross Keys have signed for Cardiff and Cardiff Blues number 8 James Malpas for the forthcoming season. This was one position that Director of Rugby Robert Beale had wanted to strengthen and the signing of former Wales Under 21 player Malpas shows that Keys are now set for an exciting forthcoming season and hope to obviously make an improvement on last seasons final league position.
PRE-SEASON RESULTS SUMMARY
Cross Keys completed their pre-season preparations with a hard-fought at Bridgewater on Saturday 25th August. Keys came away with a 19-5 victory thanks to tries from Owen Jones, Marcus Johnstone and Lloyd Burns and two conversions from stand in skipper and outside half Ryan James. Also last week Keys travelled to Cardiff to take on St. Peters on Wednesday 22nd August and won this game by 52 points to 5. The Keys scores coming via: Tries: James Egan (x3), Gareth Williams, Nathan Preece, Daniel Preece, Julian Price and David Price and Ryan James kicked 6 conversions. The results for pre season were:
versus Blackheath (11/08/07) away - lost --- 36 - 40
versus Saint Peters (22/08/07) away - won --- 52 - 5
versus Bridgewater (25/08/07) away - won --- 19 - 5
MEN OF GWENT SEVENS RUNNERS UP
Cross Keys were defeated in the final of the inaugural Men of Gwent Sevens tournament at Rodney Parade on Sunday 12 th August. The Keys lost to a Dragons Academy side, who were arguably the pre-tournament favourites in the final by 31 points to 0. Seeded 5 th as the lowest Gwent Premiership side Keys faced Bedwas and Pontypool Utd. in the group stage. The Bedwas game ended in a 19 all draw, many people believing this to be one of the better matches in the early stages of the tournament. Keys then had to wait for around an hour and a half for their next match against Pontypool Utd and ran out comfortable 38-12 winners, and qualified as runners up to Bedwas who defeated United in their final game of the group stage with a better points difference. In the quarter final Keys were last on against Newport but came away with the narrowest of wins, defeating the Black and Ambers by 7 points to 5, Marcus Johnstone getting Keys only try which was converted by James Leadbetter. This win meant Keys had to face Ebbw Vale in the semi final and looked to be heading out of the competition when they fell behind 12-0 in the opening half. Keys however hit back and won the game relatively comfortably in the end by 26 points to 17. The final was always going to be an uphill task for Keys against the full time Dragons Academy team, which included Wales 7's internationals Wayne Evans and Gareth Chapman as well as Ieuan Coombes who will play for Keys from the academy this coming season. Eventually the Dragons won by 31 points to 0 in what was a one-sided final but Keys squad can be extremely proud of their efforts especially as all of the squad was involved at Blackheath the day before. Keys wing Marcus Johnstone was named by the referees as player of the tournament. Johnstone used his lightening pace to score some brilliant tries as well stop the opposition on several occasions.
PRE-SEASON LOSS FOR KEYS
The Keys travelled to the heart of London last Saturday (11 th August) to take on English National League 2 side Blackheath at their impressive new training base at Well Hall in Eltham. The game had a typical pre-season feel about it with 3 half an hour thirds being played to give everyone a game. The game was played in superb conditions and it was Keys who quickly adapted to the conditions going ahead 12-0 before Blackheath clawed their way back to dominate the second third where Keys looked to be struggling with the power of Blackheath's big pack and powerful play. In the final period Keys played somewhere near a first team lineup, although some were missing due to holiday and work commitments and came back well but couldn't quite do enough and eventually were defeated by 40 points to 36. A very useful game for The Keys and an encouraging display from the Black and Whites. On this evidence Keys look to have benefited from signing some very good players and will be encouraged by this performance despite the defeat.
PRE SEASON FRIENDLIES
Cross Keys pre season fixture list is below:-

NEW CAPTAIN ANNOUNCED
Following the departure of Will Thomas to Ebbw Vale the Keys have announced that proven leader Ben Watkins will be the captain of the squad for the 2007/2008 campaign. Best of luck to Ben.
SQUAD UPDATE
The Keys squad for the upcoming 2007/2008 season is all but complete following the signings of a number of players during the summer. Amongst the signings made is former Keys skipper Tyron Morris, who after a over a year of recovery from a leg injury which required numerous operations, although he did turn out for home town club Risca a number of times last season, has decided to once again ply his trade at Pandy Park this coming season. This is great news to Keys who perhaps lacked genuine leaders on the pitch last season. Also re-signing for Keys after a few years away from the game is centre Rhodri Williams. The former UWIC man was a key member of Keys squad a few seasons ago and has kept himself fit and even appeared for Keys at Ebbw Vale last season.
Keys have opted for mainly youngsters in the other signings made which include Cardiff full back Leon Andrews, who has played for Wales at under 19 and 21's level and also played several games for Cardiff Blues in his time at The Arms Park. The arrival of hookers Khalid Jama, who has previously played for Bedwas and Cardiff and Lloyd Burns from Pontypool, who can also play in the back row if needed will help fill the gap left by last seasons Player of the Year Garry Horrigan who has decided to travel in the opposite direction to Andrews and Jama by signing for the Blue and Blacks of Cardiff in the hope of gaining deserved regional recognition, along with prop Richard Cornock. Other new arrivals include prop Nathan Buck, centres Chris Wannell and Nathan Preece and scrum half James Leadbetter, all of whom have represented the Dragons at various age-groups. Leadbetter trained regularly with Keys last season and is captain of Cross Keys College . Also now a permanent member of Keys squad is wing Marcus Johnstone, who previously played for Keys as a member of Newport Gwent Dragons academy. Keys academy allowance of players has increased this year with 4 players being given the chance to impress, they are: 17 year olds Ieuan Coombes (full back), Aaron Coundley (prop), both of whom have skippered the Dragons age-group sides, 18 year old Ashley Sweet (2 nd Row) and 19 year old Ben Roberts (hooker). Keys may add more signings as the season approaches, details of which will appear here.
NEW COACHING TEAM COMPLETED
The Keys have announced that former Pontypridd and Wales A wing David Manley will be their new backs coach, taking over from Nicky Lloyd, who has joined the coaching staff at Aberavon. Manley has an impressive record as a coach, mainly with UWIC and was well-known for his try scoring ability for, amongst others Pontypridd, Newbridge and Pontypool as a player. Joining Manley in the coaching staff will be former Wales full back, Matthew Back as the new fitness and skills coach. Back gained 4 caps in the mid-90s for Wales and has played a lot of top-flight rugby with Pontypridd, Swansea and Bridgend amongst his former clubs. Both Back and Manley are former team-mates with Wales A and Pontypridd and are sure to be great assets for Cross Keys. The coaching line-up for 2007/2008 season will be:-
Director of Rugby: Robert Beale
Forwards Coach: Greg Woods
Backs Coach: David Manley
Fitness and Skills Coach: Matthew Back
Team Manager: Steve Llewelyn
The Keys squad has already started training with the coaching team. Details of 10 new signings will be confirmed within the next week together with those players that are staying at Keys.
